As is our policy, this workshop is limited to only 9 participants. If you are interested, register today for this amazing photographic opportunity.

This is an excellent time to come out and join us as we chase light and color! This workshop will also be a DVD video shoot for our Steve Kossack Photographing the Great American Landscape series. Be a part this issue!

a fantasy of light in the bristlecone pine forest

The eastern Sierra is one of the great locations for Landscape photography in any season. In the fall the leaves turn at all elevations and color can be found in many locations. We will be checking reports and making use of our time to bring back some spectacular images. We will be visiting some of the best known locations for landscape photography as well as some of the lesser known areas. Come join us!

From well over 10,000 feet above sea level to the sage brush setting that is the Owens Valley, we will be on the move looking for both color and drama in a landscape that offers both. The U.S. 395 highway corridor provides a vast and varied landscape of opportunity and adventure. Some of the great artists have worked, and continue to work this area. This is your chance!

This is a FIELD photography workshop. We will be out well before dawn each day and our days will end long after sunset. There will be breaks when possible and meals will certainly happen between locations. These will be long days but highly rewarding! If you like meeting like-minded people and making new friends while sharing landscape photography strategy ... this workshop is for you!

Yosemite

Tioga Pass is the highest drivable pass in California. At just about 10,000 feet, the scenery is awe inspiring and the opportunities are many. Here is a chance to see Yosemite’s backcountry—the granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada, shimmering lakes, glacial valleys, and wildflower meadows. Tanaya Lake as well as Tuolumne Meadows are all possibilities as photographic destinations depending on time and conditions.

The Bristlecone Pine Forest

from 11,000 feet a full moon rises

A photographic wonderland not seen by many awaits us in this extraordinary setting. Found in the White-Inyo mountain range of California, these groves of bristlecone pine feather the earth's oldest living inhabitant named "Methuselah." At 4,767 years old, this tree has lived more than a millennium longer than any other tree. Although this particular tree is not marked for its own safety, you won't be at a loss for composition in this above tree line fantasyland.

Bodie Ghost Town

From more than 170 buildings, only about 5 to 10 percent remain from Bodie's glory years as an 1880s gold mining boom town. Still, their "real" feeling gives a sense of what was. For several decades in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Bodie was was a town of more than 10,000 people. It was notorious for its killings, opium dens, brutally rough living and working conditions, miserable high desert weather and remoteness. Today, keep in a state of "arrested decay" Bodie will provide us with a chance to do both architectural and creative images. You'll love this place!

Mono Lake

Mono Lake is a majestic body of water, with no outlet, covering about 65 square miles. It is an ancient lake, over 1 million years old, and one of the oldest lakes in North America. Photographers come from all over the world to capture the interplay of light, desert, and water. Mono Lake features a "rock in rare form" called Tufa. These towers line parts of the lakes shoreline and were submerged until the steams that feed the lake were diverted for water flow to Los Angeles. Today, while water is now partially flowing back into the lake, these formation make beautiful and majestic compositions. It's an image not to be missed ... and you won't!

The Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills of the old west

The Alabama Hills, located near Lone Pine California, is one of the least known of California's many geological phenomena. Masterpieces of stone, star standing like silent sentinels, form the gateway to the snow crowned Mount Whitney. Reaching 14,495 feet in elevation, Whitney is the highest point of the Sierra Nevada. The tallest mountain in the Continental United States. This backdrop of snow capped peaks and desert sage will provide us with breathtaking vistas and jaw dropping foregrounds. It's no wonder that some of the great western movies of the 40's and 50's were shot here!

Our workshop will be based in Bishop California. Our meeting will be in Reno Nevada. You will need 5 days. Two of these days are weekend days.

All transportation to Bishop, as well as all shooting locations and your return to Reno is included!

About the workshop

Our workshops are different! This is a field workshop. We will be in the field from well before sunrise to past sunset. There is little or no down time on our workshops. We try and put you in as many shooting locations and set ups during the day as possible. Some come back with as many as 2,000 frames! We know your time is limited and we want you to enjoy and experience as much landscape photography as possible on our workshop. Instruction and help is always available. There is always opportunity to work and share with the group. A print discussion of participant images is an event that you'll enjoy. A visit to the Galen Rowell Gallery in Bishop is always part of this workshop. We travel together and stay in the same lodging. Our base is the same for all three nights so there is no packing or moving once we have arrived at our destination. We spend our time and energy in the field DOING landscape photography! This workshop is open to all levels of experience and can be done with film or digital gear. A tripod is a must for landscape photography.

Included in your workshop fee are all transportation from Reno, Nevada and return. Your workshop fee also includes your room. Rooms are shared 2 participants to a room. Our time will be spent mostly in the field and sharing not only the room but your images, thoughts and time with another member of the group is very rewarding and part of the experience. If you feel the need for a private room they can be reserved at an additional $455 when you register for the workshop. Rooms are very limited so be sure to sure to add one if needed.

spectacular color in the fall

We plan to work hard and come away with hundreds, if not thousands of frames. We will be traveling continuously through out the day. We will go where the light and/or the color is. We will cover just as much of this vast area as possible. These will be long, long days. Again, there should be little, if no, down time! Our plan is to make the most of everything available. We will travel light and fast! I know you will enjoy our Sierra Fall color workshop. Please come meet our Photographing the Great American Landscape video crew and experience the photographic wonders of The Eastern Sierra for yourself!

Climate and Conditions

A reminder ... Weather is unpredictable. We will do what is possible, no matter the conditions. We could have 5 days of tee-shirt weather or 5 days of fall storms. Or, something or everything in between! Don't forget that what we photograph is light, and weather makes that light! October is a great time to experience this wonderful wonderland. We will have a full moon and the chance of color, however as always, our discipline is Landscape photography and we will be doing a lot of it! Once again, come join us!

The Cost

The workshop fee of $2,095 will be required when you register. If you need to cancel, a full refund (less $200) will be available, but only if a replacement for you can be found in time.
