On our recent spring Death Valley visit we once again visited an old favorite set up of mine. Over the many years I have been exploring, experiencing and photographing this vast expanse of desert there are certain places that I never fail to photograph. I’m always of a different mind each time I see them and of course the weather, time of day, month or year will always lend a different compositional feel.
Here the sunset from Aguerberry Point on a blue sky afternoon needed warming. The reflection from the sky will always render the shadows blue and cold. The Singh-Ray warming polarizer was the answer.
Filling the sky with rock and its detail created drama that otherwise was missing. To carry the compositions vertical lines I used a Canon 24mm Tilt/Shift lens, metered for the valley floor and let the shadows fall where they may.
Taking a deep breath and reliving the magic of the tranquil this almost makes me forget about the high winds and made me duck for cover behind the rocks between exposures!
