As we wound our way north toward our Denali workshop in Alaska a break of 3 days was taken in the beautiful serenity of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington state. Clouds, rain and clearing skies were the reward. As hoped for, a few images arose. See them in the Pacific Coast gallery here.
Denali …… The High One. New images from our recent outing have been posted in the Alaska gallery. A 5 day camping extravaganza with fantastic views, glimpses, a full moon rising at sunset and fleeting light in the land of the midnight sun. It all revolved around 20,302 foot Mt Denali and delivered a thrilling […]
Washburn Lake is 3 miles up the canyon from Merced Lake. It makes a great day hike if you do as we have in some years and spend an extra day at Merced. Washburn Lake is for all intents and purposes the headwaters of the Merced River. The River of Mercy as translated from the […]
Last summer wildfires swept through little Yosemite valley. They started the day we arrived for our annual hike. We saw the huge plume from almost 100 miles off as we approached the park from the east. That night as we partook of our communal meal, as is the custom at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, we listened […]
A long day on the trail is a kind way to describe the trek from May Lake to Sunrise high sierra camp. Miles are just a silly way to look at anything in the Sierra. Nothing is level and oxygen at 7,000 to 10,00 feet is much different than anything experienced at or near sea […]
The loop of the Yosemite high country continues from May Lake. The ritual continues as our workshop group soon learns that we indeed are different from most hikers traveling in the high country. Some of them are doing hikes that include just one high camp, some are doing more than one, others may be […]
May Lake is one of the most popular high sierra high camps for the simple reason that it is not all that far off the old Tioga Road. That road was originally built by logging concerns and then given as a gift to the national park after being bought by private interests that included Stephen […]
At 9,270 feet May Lake is the geographical center of Yosemite national park. The park itself covers almost 1,200 square miles and 94 percent of it is designated wilderness. What we see and experience on our week long outing is a tiny fraction but once away from the roads and congestion that summer can bring, […]
The best meal I’ve ever had was in the Yosemite high Sierra camps and I don’t even remember which camp, or which year! The fact is that the last one was always the best and next one will be even better. They alternate the menu so if you are going from one to the other […]
I overheard this spoken to a companion hiker years ago as members of another group started their morning preparation for the day’s journey out of Glen Aulin High Sierra camp. Like them we were now embarking on our second day having spent the previous afternoon, evening and morning photographing around the Glen Aulin area. The hike […]
